Life Assurance

Life assurance benefit is payable on the death of the subscribing member or their partner normally up to the age of 70 years.

Partners can remain in the scheme until they reach the age of 70 years or until the serving or retired officer reaches 70 years, whichever occurs first.

Officers retiring on ill health grounds may continue to subscribe to the scheme. Benefits remain the same as for officers retiring in good health.

Get an additional £100,000 life cover for £12 per month! Serving officers and their partners who are already in our group scheme can increase their level of cover for a small monthly premium. With three different levels of cover to choose from, you can add up to a maximum of £100,000.

Partners may join the scheme at the same time as a new employee or within three months of either marrying or becoming a serving officer’s partner. Partners who wish to join at any other time may do so provided they are able to satisfy the health declaration detailed in the ‘late joiner’ partner application form.

Definition of partner - “Partner” means the person to whom the subscribing member is married or in a Civil Partnership with or, if not, a person who is openly cohabiting with him or her and who has been so cohabiting for the six months’ period prior to the date of inclusion in the policy, and on whom such a member is financially interdependent.

Death Benefit
The scheme is written in Trust. This means that the benefit does not form part of the member's estate and is not, under current legislation, subject to inheritance tax. Benefit payments are dispersed by the Trustees at their discretion, normally to the member's chosen beneficiary. It is therefore important to keep the beneficiary details held by your Federation or Fire Service up to date.

Terminal illness benefit
If a serving member under the age of 69 (64 if retired) is diagnosed as having an illness or injury from which he or she is expected to die within 12 months, they may apply for an advance of 20% of the life assurance benefit. Terminal illness benefit is payable direct to the member and will therefore form part of their estate. The amount advanced will be deducted from the settlement on death.

This benefit does not apply to all schemes.

Child death grant
This benefit is paid upon the death of a dependent child aged between six months and 17 years.

This benefit does not apply to all schemes.
